On 21 February 1942, Hampden X2968 was on a training flight and crashed following three unsuccessful attempts to land during night training.

On the previous day, 27 May 1940 two aircraft from 16 OTU at Upper Heyford were on a flight to the Bristol Channel and an air firing detail. Hampden L4156 and L4158 collided in mid-air near Ilfracombe. All the crews were killed although Rupert Frost died of his injuries the following day.

He died on 30 December 1936 Age 27
The dedication is: TO THE GLORY OF GOD
A report in the magazine Flight for 7 January 1937 states “The Air Ministry regrets to announce that Sgt. Stanley James Ower lost his life, and Corpl. Brean Thomas Alfred Hobbs was slightly injured, in an accident which occurred near Brackley, Northamptonshire, on December 30, to an aircraft of No, 18 (Bomber) Squadron, Upper Heyford. Sgt. Ower was the pilot of the aircraft and Corpl. Hobbs the passenger.”
They were flying Hawker Hind K5474 and when practicing forced landings, the aircraft stalled on its final turn.

Because he died in 1936, there is no CWGC information about him and you will notice that the memorial stone is of a different shape implying that it was privately funded
