FAWCETT, James Bell
Private 8th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own, (Yorkshire Regiment) 69 Brigade, 23rd Division. Army no. 32973.
He was killed in action on Thursday 7 June 1917 at the Battle of Messines. He was 38.
He was the son of the late Robert and Ann Fawcett, Newbiggin and the husband of Elizabeth Ann Fawcett, Stanley Cottage, Thoralby.
He is remembered on The Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres and on the Aysgarth Memorial.
 
GOULD, George Sydney
Private, 29th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Army no. 423027.
He died on Tuesday 10 April 1917 at Vimy.  He was 26
He was the son of George and Isabella Gould, Thoralby.
He is remembered in The Canadian Book of Remembrance and according to the Canadian Virtual War Memorial on the Vimy Memorial and on the family headstone in Aysgarth Churchyard.

GOULD, John Miles
Private, 17th (Service) Battalion (NER Pioneers), The Northumberland Fusiliers Brigade, Division.  Army no. 17/1135.
He died on active service on Friday 9 April 1915. His Battalion was in Hull and working on railway construction. He was 26.
He was the son of George and Isabella Gould, Thoralby.
He is buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's Church, Aysgarth.
NER is North Eastern Railways.
           
HESELTINE, Matthew
Private, 6th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own, (Yorkshire Regiment) 32 Brigade, 11th Division.  Army no. 2034.8
He was killed in action on Thursday 14 September 1916 in the Battle of the Somme. He was about 22.
He was the son of the late Thomas Heseltine, Newbiggin, Aysgarth.
He is remembered on The Thiepval Memorial and on the Aysgarth Memorial.

HESELTINE, Matthew
Private, 6th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own, (Yorkshire Regiment) 32 Brigade, 11th Division.  Army no. 20349.
He was killed in action on Thursday 14 September 1916 in the Battle of the Somme. He was about 22.
He was the son of the late Matthew and Margaret Heseltine, Thoralby
 
He is remembered on The Thiepval Memorial and on the Aysgarth Memorial.
 
LODGE, (Hon) John William
Colonel, 3rd Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own, (Yorkshire Regiment) who was Commanding 2nd (Home Service) Garrison Battalion.
He died whilst on active service on Thursday 23 August 1917. He was 60.
He was the son of the late Robert and Mary Lodge, Bishopdale, Aysgarth.
He is buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's Church, Aysgarth.
He had commanded 3rd Battalion in the South African Campaign.
His name is on the Aysgarth Memorial.
