Private, 8th (Service) Battalion, The York and Lancaster Regiment, 70 Brigade, 8th Division.  Army no 32528.
He was killed in action on Thursday 7 June 1917. He was 33.
He was the son of James and Elizabeth Alderson, Oakworth House, Bridge Terrace, Reeth,
He is remembered on The Menin Gate Memorial Ypres and on the memorial in Grinton.
 
ALLAN, Ronald        
Private, 9th (Service) Battalion, The King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry), 64 Brigade, 21st Division.  Army no 235470. He had also served as Private, Army no 205219 with The Northumberland Fusiliers.
He died from his wounds on Thursday 7 November 1918. He was 21.
He was the son of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Allan, Apple Terrace, Reeth,
He is buried in Ghissignies British Cemetery, France. He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
ALLINSON, Robert George             
Gunner, 79th Brigade HQ, Royal Field Artillery. Army no. 20583.
He died on Tuesday 2 October 1917 probably from natural causes. He was 30.
He was the son of Mary Allinson, Grinton and the late Robert Allinson.
He is buried in Duisans British Cemetery, Étrun.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
ALLINSON, Thompson
Private, 5th Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own, (Yorkshire Regiment), 150 Brigade, 50th Division.  Army no 2379.
He was killed in action on 13 September 1916 on the battlefields of the Somme. He was 25.
He was the son of Robert and Mary Allinson, Grinton.
He is buried in Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz.
 
BARKER, John                     
Corporal, 9th (Service) Battalion, The Prince of Wales’s Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment), 58 Brigade, 19th Division.  Army no 17370.
He died on Monday 6 May 1918 probably from natural causes. He was 26.
He was the son of Adam G and Dorothy A Barker, Sunnyside, Healaugh.
He is buried in Sarigol Military Cemetery, Kriston, Greece and his headstone is inscribed He was the son of Adam G Barker, Healaugh, Richmond, Yorks  At Rest.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
BARKER, Robin                   
Cadet, 8th Cadet Wing, Royal Air Force. RAF no 183681.
He died on Thursday 7 November 1918 possibly of natural causes. He was 18.
He was the son of Marie Barker, Langhorne House, Reeth and the late John Barker.
He is buried in the churchyard of St. Andrew’s Church, Grinton and his headstone is inscribed Son of Marie A. and the late John Barker of Lanchorne House, Reeth.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.

I believe that the memorial plaque has the incorrect name. Robert should be Robin.
 
CLEMINSON, William          
Private, 8th (Service) Battalion, The Northumberland Fusiliers, 34 Brigade, 11th Division.  Army no 40318.  He had also served as Private, Army no. 44433 with the Territorial Reserve Battalion.
He died from his wounds on Saturday 24 February 1917. He was 22.
He was the son of Robert and Ann Cleminson, Grinton.
He is buried in Abbeville Communal Cemetery Extension and he appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
HAW, Henry                                                  
Private, 6th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own, (Yorkshire Regiment), 32 Brigade, 11th Division.  Army no 20312.
He was killed in action on 27 September 1917. He was 21.
He was the son of Thomas H and Ada N Haw, Downholme.
He is remembered on The Tyne Cot Memorial and on the memorial in Grinton.
 
HIRD, Richard
Private, 19th Battalion, Australian Infantry, Australian Imperial Force. Army no. 1549.
He was killed in action on Thursday 27 July 1916. He was 28.
He was the son of Esther Hird, Fremington, Grinton.
He is remembered on The Villers-Bretonneux Memorial and on the memorial in Grinton.
 
KENDALL, Francis G 
Sapper, 222nd Field Company, Royal Engineers. Army no. 155652.
He was killed in action on Monday 30 September 1918. He was 42.
He was the son of John and Mary Kendall, Reeth and the husband of Barbara R Kendall, 9 Mitchell Street, West Hartlepool, Co. Durham.
He is buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel le Grand and his headstone is inscribed Resting. He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
MARTINSCROFT, George M
Private, 20th (Service) Battalion (Wearside), The Durham Light Infantry, 124 Brigade, 41st Division.  Army no 20/839.
He was killed in action on Tuesday 1 October 1918 in the Battle of Ypres. He was 37.
He was the son of Frances Martinscroft, Reeth.
He is buried in Zantvoorde British Cemetery in Belgium.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
MOORE, Stanley Harding   
Lance Corporal, 2nd/5th Battalion TF, The Lincolnshire Regiment, 46th Division.  Army no 241829.
He was killed in action on Wednesday 11 April 1917 near Hill 70. He was 19.
He was the son of James William and Amy Moore, Langhorne Cottage, Reeth.
He is remembered on The Thiepval Memorial and on the memorial in Grinton.
 
MORGAN, Joseph James   
Private, K Siege Park, Mechanical Transport, Army Service Corps.  Army no M2/052018.
He was killed in action on Wednesday 18 September 1918. He was 23.
He was the son of Richard H and Hannah M Morgan.
He is buried in Hancourt British Cemetery, The Somme.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
PEACOCK, Henry Harry      
Private, 5th Battalion TF, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own, (Yorkshire Regiment), 150 Brigade, 50th Division.  Army no 241634.
He died from his wounds on 28 April 1917 probably received during the Battle of the Scarpe.
He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
PEACOCK, James known as Jim  
Private, 6th (Service) Battalion, The King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment), 38 Brigade, 13th Division. Army no 17432.
He died on active service on Monday 22 May 1916.
He is remembered on a Memorial in Mhow New Cemetery in India and on the memorial in Grinton.
Additional information
CWGC reported in 1925 that his grave cannot be found but he was apparently serving in Iraq so why is his Memorial in India?
 
RAW, John Appleton 
Private, 6th (Service) Battalion, The Border Regiment, 33 Brigade, 11th Division. Army no 18174.
He died on active service on Wednesday 8 December 1915. Malta was a major Hospital Centre. He was 21.
He was the son of John and Jane Raw, Reeth.
He is buried in Pieta Military Cemetery and his headstone is inscribed At Rest. He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
WARD, Tom  
Company Sergeant Major, The Northamptonshire Regiment.  Army no 50876. He had previously been attached to The Army Gymnastics Staff. Army no. 387.
He died on active service on Saturday 27 April 1918.
He is buried in Arneke British Cemetery, Northern France He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.

BARNINGHAM, George William 
Gunner, 109th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Army no. 123591.
He died in hospital on Tuesday 12 November 1918. He was 40.
He was the son of the late George Barningham, Reeth, husband of Annie Hill (formerly Barningham), 11 Cross Street, Cheadle, Stoke-on-Trent.
He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen and his headstone is inscribed RIP.
 
BURGOYNE-JOHNSON, Luther Vincent 
Captain, 8th Battalion TF, The Durham Light Infantry, 151 Brigade, 50th Division.
He was killed in action on Monday 26 April 1915 at the Battle of St Julien. He was 24.
He was the son of Mrs M Burgoyne-Johnson, The Hill House, Reeth and the late Lt Col J Burgoyne-Johnson.
He is remembered on The Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres.
 
LONGSTAFF, Thomas Henry 
Lance Corporal, Military Police Corps. Army no. P/5214
He died as a consequence of his military service on Tuesday 15 April 1919. His death is in the civilian registrations so he had been discharged from the Army. He was 31.
He was the son of John and Mary J Longstaff, Raw Bank, Reeth.
He is buried in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, Arkengarthdale and his headstone is inscribed Rest in Peace.
 
SPENSLEY, Frank Oswald 
Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps attached to Royal Air Force.
Wednesday 23 October 1918. He was 39.
He was the son of the Rev. James Spensley and Catherine his wife, Reeth.
He is buried in Melcombe Regis Cemetery and his headstone is inscribed He endured hardness as a good soldier Salonika 1916-1918.
Additional information
He was educated at Kingswood School, Bath, and St. Thomas's Hospital, London. He served in Salonika. MRCS, LRCP (Eng.). Senior Medical Officer, Darenth Industrial Colony, London.
 
 
Those who Fell in WW2
 
CHARLESWORTH, Albany Kennett            MC  
Captain, 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wales's Dragoon Guards). Royal Armoured Corps Army no. 59123.
He died on active service on Thursday 1 February 1945. He was 52.
He was the son of Albany H and Eleanor C Charlesworth and the husband of Diana Charlesworth, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk.
He is buried in Imtarfa Military Cemetery, Malta and his headstone is inscribed Their Works Do Follow Them.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
CRAIG, John Edwin
Leading Aircraftman, 938 Balloon Squadron, Royal Air Force RAAF no 867751
He died on active service on Thursday 28 November 1940. He was 32.
He was the son of Thomas E and Elizabeth Craig and the husband of Vera W Craig, Gosforth, Newcastle on Tyne.
He is buried in Reeth and Grinton Cemetery and his headstone is inscribed Sweet is his memory dear his name the love in our hearts will ever remain.
Additional information
His squadron comprised 3 Flights of 8 balloons which were in Stockton on Tees and Billingham.
 
GIBSON, Guy Wordsworth 
Lieutenant Colonel, commanding 1st Battalion, The Loyal Regiment (North Lancashire). Army no. 21472.
He died on active service on Friday 23 April 1943 in the final days of the North African Campaign. He was 43.
He was the son of Daniel and Mary E W Gibson and the husband of Betty Gibson, Mickley.
He is buried in Massicault War Cemetery, Tunisia and his headstone is inscribed Husband of Betty Gibson of Yorkshire and Dear Father of Mary and John. He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
 
HAMMOND, William Woodward
Aircraftman 2nd Class, 907 Balloon Squadron, Royal Air Force. RAFVR no 1110571.
He died on active service on Saturday 19 October 1940. He was 29.
He was the son of Edward and Mary M Hammond, Reeth.
He is buried in Reeth and Grinton Cemetery.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.

907 (County of Middlesex) Balloon Squadron was based at Harringay and in neighbouring Woodberry Down.
 
KENDALL, Francis Alderson 
Sergeant, 106 Squadron, Royal Air Force. RAFVR no 1676293.
He died on active service on Sunday 14 January 1945. He was 20.
He was the son of Oliver and Elizabeth A Kendall, Low Row.
He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen and his headstone is inscribed God Reclaims a Hero He Loaned to Britain in Her Hour of Need.
Additional information
Lancaster III, PB 122 ZN-Y took off from RAF Metheringham near Lincoln at 16.10 hours to bomb a synthetic oil plant. On her return journey at 23.59 hours, she flew into the ground 16 kms from Amiens. All 7 of the crew died.
 
MARTIN, William Hunter 
Gunner, 95 Battery, 48 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. Army no. 1738047
He died on active service on Sunday 6 December 1942. He was 37.
He was the son of John W and Emily Martin and the husband of Marjorie E Martin, Richmond.
He is buried in Jakarta War Cemetery.  He also appears on the Memorial in Grinton.
Additional information
At this time, a couple of months after the surrender in Java he would have been a Prisoner of War of the Japanese Army and possibly he was one of those used as a Slave Labourer.
 
ROBINSON, Joseph William Ivan
Flight Sergeant, 77 Squadron, Royal Air Force.  RAFVR no 1082484.
He died on active service on Saturday 29 January 1944. He was 22.
He was the son of Thomas and Sarah Annie Robinson, Hartforth.
He is remembered on The Runnymede Memorial and on the memorial in Grinton.
Additional information
Halifax V LK729 EN-F took off at 23.44 hours on an operation to Berlin.  He has no known grave.
 
SPENCE, John 
Private, General Service Corps.  Army no 14564182.
He died on military service on Wednesday 21 April 1943.
He is buried in Cathcart Cemetery, Glasgow
This is the name on the memorial and this is a man that I can find nothing about in a unit that is not publicised.
