Army no. 51910. He died from his wounds on 24 December 1918. He was 20. He was the son of James and Annie Crabtree, Newton-le-Willows. He was the husband of Catherine Webb (formerly Fawcett), Patrick Brompton. He is buried in Dar Es Salaam War Cemetery, Tanzania. HODGSON, Arthur Private, 2nd Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 21 Brigade, 30th Division. Army no 27283. He was killed in action on Thursday 26 July 1917. He was 26. He was the son of William and Mary Hodgson, Hutton. He is remembered on The Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres HUNTER, George Private, 6th (Service) Battalion, The Dorsetshire Regiment, 50 Brigade, 17th Division. Army no 23485. He was born in Newton le Willows in 1878. LAINE, Arthur Chief Engine Room Artificer 1st Class, HMS Black Prince, Royal Navy. RN no 268973. He was killed on active service on 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. He was 40. He was the son of John and Elizabeth Laine, Darlington and the husband of Mabel A Laine, Sheerness, Kent. He is remembered on The Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Additional information HMS Black Prince was an armoured Cruiser became separated from the British Fleet. She was under fire from the battleships Thuringen, Nassau, Ostfriesland and Frederich der Grosse. HMS Black Prince was hit by at least 12 shells and sank within 15 minutes. All 857 of her crew were killed. MYERS, Frank I am uncertain of this man but I believe it is: Bombardier, C Battery, 157th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Army no 89697. He died on active service on Tuesday 25 January 1916. He was 35. He was the husband of Mary Jane Myers, Pickhill. He is buried in the churchyard of All Saints Church, Pickhill and his headstone is inscribed He died for King and Country. PICKERSGILL, Ernest Blythe Lance Corporal, 1st/5th Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 150 Brigade, 50th Division. Army no 201203. He died from his wounds on Friday 14 December 1917. He was 29. He was the son of Francis J and Esther Pickersgill, Hunton. He is buried in Potijze Chateau Grounds Cemetery near Ypres. He is also remembered on the Memorial in Hunton. PROCTER, John Lance-Sergeant, 8th (Service) Battalion, The King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry), 70 Brigade,8th Division. Army no 17364. He was killed in action on 1 July 1916 in the Battle of Albert, the first day of the Somme. He was 25. He was the son of Joseph & Maria Procter, Newton le Willows. He is buried in Blighty Valley Cemetery, Authuile Wood on the Somme. SARGEANT, William Rawlinson Wells Able Seaman, HMS Columbine, Royal Navy. RN no J41640. He was the son of Maria Sargeant, Patrick Brompton. He died of Tuberculosis in June 1920 having been discharged from the Royal Navy the previous year. He was buried on 15 June 1920 in Patrick Brompton. He was 22 SCAIFE, Ernest Gunner, W Battery, 18th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Army no 26702. He died from his wounds on 8 July 1916. He was 21. He was the son of Robert and Elizabeth A Scaife, Maunby. He is buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen. SHAW, Thomas Private, 11th (Service) Battalion, The Northumberland Fusiliers, 68 Brigade, 23rd Division. Army no 55775. He was killed in action on Sunday 27 October 1918. He was 21. He was the son of John and Eliza Shaw, Hunton. He is buried in Tezze British Cemetery, a village north of Venice and his headstone is inscribed Greater Love hath no Man. His death is in the civilian registrations so he had been discharged from the Army although I cannot give a reason but it was probably on grounds of his health or his wounds. He was 26. He was the son of Ralph and Martha Terry, 55 Low Petergate, York. He is buried in the churchyard of St. Mary’s Church, Hornby. WILSON, David Askew Able Seaman, SS Persia (Greenock), Mercantile Marine. He was killed by enemy action at sea on 30 December 1915. He was 19. He was the son of Theresa A G Wilson, Patrick Brompton Vicarage and the late David J Wilson, The Wheatsheaf, Newton le Willows. He is remembered on The Tower Hill Memorial. He is not on the memorial. Additional information The ss Persia was a liner which had left Tilbury docks on 18 December with 519 passengers and crew on board, 184 of them passengers. She was sunk at lunchtime on 30 December 1915, south-east of Crete, by the German submarine U-38. The submarine had attacked in the Mediterranean, off Crete, without warning. He was killed in action on Monday 17 June 1940 when the troopship Lancastria was bombed and sunk off St Nazaire as the soldiers were leaving France after Dunkirk. He was 29. He was the son of David and Elizabeth Matthews and the husband of Sarah Matthews, Hunton. He is buried in Les Moutiers en Retz Communal Cemetery. He is also remembered on the Memorial in Hunton. SMITH, Eric Edward Guardsman, Coldstream Guards. Army no 2669727. He died as a result of his war service on 23 August 1945 in Devizes RD.
