Oakham SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF MARTHA, WIFE OF THOMAS FREER MD WHO DIED NOVEMER 25TH 1827, AGED 57 ALSO EDWARD GARDNER FREER LIEUT 43RD LIGHT INFANTRY (THIRD SON OF THE ABOVE) WHO FELL IN ACTION IN THE PYRENNEES NOVEMBER 10TH 1813, AGED 20 ALSO THE ABOVE THOMAS FREER MD WHO DIED MAY 22ND 1835, AGED 79 WHOSE REMAINS WITH THOSE OF MARTHA, HIS WIFE REPOSE IN A VAULT NEAR THIS SPOT An amplification The battle of the Nivelle started just before dawn 0n 10 November 1813 as the Light Division headed towards the plateau on the summit of the Greater Rhune The objective of the division was to sweep the three defensive forts the French had constructed out of the battle. They moved down into the ravine in front of the Lesser Rhune and were ordered to lie down and await the order to attack. After the signal from a battery of cannon, the offensive began. It started with the men of the 43rd, 52nd and 95th - with the 17th Portuguese Caçadores in support - storming the redoubts on the crest of the Rhune. Despite this being a risky move and the men being almost exhausted, the surprise and boldness of the British sent the French fleeing towards other forts on other hills. SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF LT COLONEL WILLIAM GARDNER FREER KH WHO DIED AT CORFU COMMANDING HBM TENTH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY ON THE 2ND OF AUGUST 1836 AGED 45 YEARS HE SERVED IN THE 43RD (OR MONMOUTHSHIRE) LIGHT INFANTRY (ONE OF THE REGIMENTS OF THE LIGHT DIVISION OF THE ARMY) IN ALL THE CAMPAIGNS OF THE PENINSULAR WAR FROM 1808 TO 1814 HE WAS PRESENT DURING THAT EVENTFUL PERIOD IN THE BATTLES AND SEIGES OF VIMIERA – CORUNNA – BUSACO FUENTES D’ONOR – CUIDAD RODRIGO – BADAJOS – VITTORIA – NIVELLE – NIVE – TOULOUSE – AND LOST HIS RIGHT ARM AT THE STORMING OF BADAJOS THIS TRIBUTE TO THE MEMORY OF A DISTINGUISHED SOLDIER AND A SINCERE FRIEND IS ERECTED BY HIS FELLOW OFFICERS BY WHOM A MONUMENT HAS BEEN PLACED OVER HIS REMAINS WHICH WERE INTERRED AT CORFU An amplification Corfu was a British Garrison within the Ionian Islands with over 3,000 troops stationned there. There was no major incident at that time so William Freer probably succumbed to disease |

He was 25 He was the son of George and Eliza Bland of Empingham. Edgar F BROWN Private, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment, Natal Field Force. Army no. 5308 He was wounded on 8 September 1900 at Lydenburg. He was 21 He was the son of William H and Mary A Brown of Edith Weston The Hon Cecil Montague EVANS-FREKE Lieutenant, 16th Lancers, South Africa Field Force He died whilst on active service on 15 June 1900 at Bloemfontein. He was 24 He was the son of William Charles Evans-Freke, Baron Carbery and Victoria Evans-Freke, Baroness Carbery Additional information His address for Probate was Glaston House Uppingham. There is a memorial plaque in the St Andrews Church, Glaston which states that he died at Boksburg, Transval from wounds he had received at Bapsfontein Kenneth MacKenzie KINNISON Trooper, 7th (1st Leicestershire) Company, 4th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. Army no. 2183 He died 26 March 1902 at 2 Sussex Terrace, Bournemouth He was the son of Alexander M and Hannah Additional information Probate was granted to Alexander MacKenzie KINNISON, Surveyor of Highways. Kenneth’s address was stated as Pen Street Oakham William Edward MANN Trooper, 14th Hussars, South Africa Field Force. Army no. 65 He was wounded at Surprise Hill and died at Derdepoort on 11 July 1900. He was 27 He was the son of Edward and Alice Mann of Langham Charles NEALE Private, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots, South Africa Field Force. Army no. 6886 He died on 17 January 1901 at Middelburg from disease whilst on active service He was the son of Emma Neale (later Broom) of Oakham Additional information He appears as C Neall in some military records His name also appears on the Royal Scots Memorial, St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh John Henry GARRATT Private, 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards, South Africa Field Force. Army no. 4934 He was killed on active service on 29 May 1900 at Senekal. He was 27 He was the son of Charles and Emma Garratt of Uppingham Additional information I believe that the spelling on the Memorial Plaque is correct as it reflects his birth registration Arthur PANTER Colour Sergeant, 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards, South Africa Field Force. Army no. 7424 He died of disease on active service on 15 July 1900 in Pretoria Reuben and Phoebe Carter Panter of Stretton and the husband of Annie Panter Albert Edward PEASGOOD Bugler, 1st Volunteer Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, Natal Field Force. Army no. 6741 He died in Modder Spruit on 26 May 1900 probably from disease on active service. He was 25 He lived in Oakham and he was the son of James and Mary Peasgood of Stamford He is remembered on the South African (Boer) War Memorial (1899 – 1902), Town Hall Square, Leicester on the corner of Horsefair Street & Every Street S B SIMPSON Drummer, (or Driver), 42nd Battery, Royal Field Artillery, Natal Field Force Army no. 90415 He died in Ladysmith on active service on 16 January 1900 apparently of Dysentry. It is also the time that the battle to relieve Ladysmith was raging He lived in North Luffenham but I have not been able to identify any further detail about him Thomas George TAYLOR Sergeant, 7th Company, 4th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. Army no. 2243 He died on active service but there does not appear to be a record of when, how or where he died He lived in Oakham. Details of his birth and family have not been established He is remembered on the South African (Boer) War Memorial (1899 – 1902), Town Hall Square, Leicester on the corner of Horsefair Street & Every Street William THOMPSON Sergeant, 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, South Africa Field Force. Army no. 1572 He died on active service in Elandsfontein on 1 April 1902. He was 24 He was the son of Mrs Mary Ann Thompson of Morcott Elandsfontein Base Hospital was initially an Imperial Yeomanry Hospital which opened 29 June 1901. Army no. 1311 He was the son of Benjamin and Jane Wright of Lyndon He died whilst on active service on 17 June 1902 at Roodepport Nek Additional information On the north wall of the north aisle of Lyndon Church there is a plaque which commemorates the death in South Africa. The account here is from the Grantham Journal of 5 July 1902. Sad news reached [Lyndon] on June 24th, by telegram from the War Office to Mr and Mrs B Wright, stating that their eldest son, Frederick Lewis [of the South African Constabulary] had been thrown from his horse in South Africa, causing concussion of the brain, from which he died. He was well-known and respected, gaining many friends wherever he went, and his death will be felt and deplored. Great sympathy is expressed for the bereaved parents and his brother, in their trouble. The Boer War Memorial in Leicester
