He was killed in action on 3 September 1916. He was 22.
He was the son of Robert Carter, 89 Station Road, Copnor, Portsmouth.
He is buried in grave IX D 18 Serre Road Cemetery No. 1

Born 15 July 1895, Joined 26 September 1910, Porter 28 November 1913 and volunteered for the Army on 19 August 1914

George James CHRISTMAS
Private, 1st/5th Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Army no. T/4455
He died probably of natural causes on 29 October 1915 
He is buried in grave 4 Old Ground B 4287 in Guildford Cemetery

Thomas W DOWDEN
Sergeant, 1st Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), 17 Brigade, 24th Division. Army no. 229277. He was formerly Private, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) Army no. 3044.
He was killed in action on the Somme on 30 December 1917. He was 25.
He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dowden, 20 Frome Terrace,
Dorchester.
He is remembered on pier and face 9D and 16B of the Thiepval Memorial

He died on 29 November 1918. He was 40.
He was the son of William T Emmings and the husband of Annie Emmings, Hill View, James Road, Peasmarsh

The Royal Defence Corps was a corps of the British Army formed in August 1917 and disbanded in 1936. It was initially formed by converting the (Home Service) Garrison battalions of line infantry regiments. Garrison battalions were composed of soldiers either too old or medically unfit for active front-line service; the Home Service status indicated they were unable to be transferred overseas.
Eighteen battalions were converted in this way.  Their role was to provide troops for security and guard duties inside the UK; guarding important locations such as ports or bridges It also provided independent companies for guarding prisoner-of-war camps.

He died from his wounds on 29 May 1918. He was 21 
He was the son of Albert and the late Emily Maria Hall, 30 Carmichael Road, South Norwood, London.
He is buried in grave IV B 16 Brandhoek New Military Cemetery No.3

Charles Andrew HAWKINS
Gunner, C Battery, 71st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Army no. 10001 
He died from his wounds on 13 April 1917. He was 19 
He is buried in grave III J 24 Duisans British Cemetery, Étrun

He worked for the Railway Company from 24 April 1911, initially as a Signal Lad then as a Lamp Lad
He volunteered on 4 September 1914

Sapper, No. 2 Light Railway Operating Company, Royal Engineers. Army no. 257632. He was formerly Private, 2 LRO Company The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Army no. G/13188
He was killed in action on 21 March 1918. He was 18 
He was the son of George and Susan Matlock of Slyfield Green.   
He is buried in grave I B 9 Foreste Communal Cemetery

Ernest William NEVILLE
Sergeant, 7th Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), 55 Brigade, 18th Division. Army no. 1978
He was killed in action on 2 May 1916. He was 33.
He was the son of Ellen Baker, Chapel Row, East Coker, Yeovil.
He is buried in grave II G 6 Cerisy-Gailly Military Cemetery

Benjamin Ernest F NEWNHAM

He was killed in action on 24 February 1918.  He was 19.
