The 34th Sikh Pioneers were serving as the Pioneer battalion of 3rd Lahore Division at Ambala and nine days later on 17 August the regiment reached Bombay. After the conversion of ships to accommodate the animals, they embarked on the SS Nurani, arriving at Marseille on the 26 September. With an urgent need to prevent the advance of the German right wing to the English Channel, the Indian Corps with the Ferozepore and Jullundur Brigades of 3rd Lahore Division in the lead. They were rushed north to support the Allied lines of defence reaching their forward concentration area. They arrived at Bailleul on 22 October to work on the construction of defences but instead they were thrown into the front line on the following day alongside the 59th Scinde Rifles. For the next four days the battalion was in the front line under continuous shelling and sniping. By the end of October 34th Sikh Pioneers had suffered a baptism of fire, losing 1 British officer killed, three British officers and two Indian officers wounded and fifteen other ranks killed and 189 wounded but then in mid-November the 34th was constructing gun emplacements and making general improvements to the Allied lines around Festubert and Neuve Chapelle. On 22 November the whole of the Lahore Division was moved back into the front line and the following day a German attack fell against the positions of the 34th Sikh Pioneers. This was the beginning of the battle that came to be referred to as “Festubert 1914”. As the Germans advanced into the Indian trenches the 34th were rallied by Captain MacKain, who was mortally wounded and carried out of the trench by Sepoy Ishar Singh. An unsuccessful counter-attack was attempted by Captain Crookshank as the regiment’s aid post came under intense shell fire, with Sub-Assistant Harnam Singh and Pala Singh, the hospital Havildar, rescuing the wounded. With their former trenches lost, the 34th then took part in the desperate attempts to recover the lost ground throughout the next night. Despite heavy losses from all units, the trenches were retaken by the following morning. The 34th suffered more than most, with their Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Kelly killed along with Captain MacKain, three British officers wounded and another three missing. Three Subedars, Natha Singh, Ram Singh and Subder Singh, were also killed with a further Subedar and two Jemadars wounded. In total, the battalion lost 161 killed and missing and 105 wounded. Caulfield RN, was in the western entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar off Cape Trafalgar when she was torpedoed by the German submarine UB-50. After the first explosion, the ship listed ten degrees to port. A few minutes later, a second explosion started a fire in a magazine, which in turn caused a cordite explosion. Darkness below decks made it virtually impossible to find the flooding valves for the magazines, and those the crew did find were poorly located and hard to turn, and the resulting failure to properly flood the burning magazine probably doomed the ship. Britannia held her list for 2½ hours before sinking, allowing most of the crew to be taken off. Most of those lost were killed by toxic smoke from burning cordite; 50 men died and 80 were injured. In total, 39 officers and 673 men were saved. Sunk only two days before the Armistice was signed on 11 November 1918, Britannia was the last Royal Navy vessel to be sunk during WW1. He is remembered on panel 8 of Portsmouth Naval Memorial Additional information January 13, 1915: The armed merchant cruiser HMS Viknor disappeared off Tory Island, Ireland. Built by Robert Napier in 1888 as the Atrato for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. she was 421' long with a 50' beam and registered at 5,347 tons. The Atrato could carry 279 passengers and was used for the routes between England and the West Indies. In 1912 she was renamed The Viking for her new owners, the Viking Cruising Co. With the outbreak of World War 1 most passenger liners were requisitioned by the Admiralty for war service and so was The Viking. In 1914 she was converted into an armed merchant cruiser and renamed HMS Viknor. The Viknor was assigned to the 10th cruiser squadron and was used to patrol the waters between Scotland and Iceland. It was while on this duty that the Viknor came to grief. For unknown reasons the ship, which had been in wireless contact with shore, sank without ever sending a distress signal. It is known that the German's had recently mined the area in which Viknor was operating and there was also a violent storm at the time. Whether it was the storm a mine or a combination of both is not known. What is known is that not one of the almost three hundred on board survived. Some of the bodies of the crew washed up on Irish and Scottish soil over the course of several days. In 2006 the survey ship Celtic Explorer located the wreck of HMS Viknor, according to Dr. Ian Lawler, the wreck is located on the outer edge of a minefield laid by SMS Berlin which lends some credibility to the theory that she could have hit a mine, but at this time there is still no definitive answer as to the cause of the loss.
