HIGHAM, Frank Lance Corporal, 1st/5th Battalion, The Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment), 147 Brigade, 49th Division. Army no 242388. He died from his wounds on Monday 23 April 1917. He was 18. He was the son of John and Annie E Higham. He is buried in Vieille Chapelle New Military Cemetery, La Couture. HYMAS, Charles Edward Private, 257th Area Employment Company, Labour Corps. Army no 378783. He died on military service on Thursday 13 December 1917. He was probably involved in salvage work. He was 28. He was the son of Tom and Margaret Hymas and the husband of Amelia B Hymas. He is buried in Longuenesse Souvenir Cemetery, St. Omer. MARSHALL, Horace Private, 1st/6th Battalion, The Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment), 147 Brigade, 49th Division. Army no 6/3718. He was killed in action on Friday 16 July 1915. He was 24. He was the son of Arthur W and Anne Marshall, 3 Waterloo Terrace, Bramley, Leeds. He is buried in Colne Valley Cemetery, Boesinghe, Belgium. MAUDE, Gerald William Edward Captain, 1st Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment). He died of pneumonia on 5 November 1919 at 35 British General Hospital, Peshawar. He was 30. He was born at Rylstone. He was the elder son of Lieutenant Colonel William W and Beatrice D G Maude, The Fleets, Rylstone and 4th West Yorkshire Militia. He was the husband of Edith V C Maude He is remembered on The India Gate Memorial, Delhi. Additional information He had served with 1st Battalion in India during WW1 and was wounded at Dakka, Afghanistan in May 1919. And his brother MAUDE, Michael Day Wade Captain, 3rd Battalion attached to 9th Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment). He died from his wounds on 14 October 1917 at the Military Hospital, Dover. He was 27. He was the son of Lieutenant Colonel William W Maude, The Fleets, Rylstone and 4th West Yorkshire Militia. He is buried in the churchyard of St Peter’s Church, Rylstone. NELSON, Fred Slinger Private, 4th (Extra Reserve) Battalion, The South Staffordshire Regiment, 7 Brigade, 25th Division. Army no 42761. He was killed in action on Thursday 11 April 1918 at the Battle of Messines. He was 19. He was the son of Annie and the late Joseph Nelson, 20 Castle Street, Skipton. He is remembered on The Ploegsteert Memorial. PROCTER, John Norman William Atkinson M C, Mentioned in Despatches Lieutenant, 1st/6th Battalion, The Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment), 147 Brigade, 49th Division. He died from his wounds on Thursday 2 May 1918 in a Casualty Clearing Station in Esquelbecq. He was 23. He was the son of William A and Rebecca Procter, Bordley, Easby Drive, Ilkley. He was born in Rylstone. He is buried in Esquelbecq Military Cemetery which is between St Omer and Dunkirk. RENTON, Thomas Benson Private, 227th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), Brigade, Division. Army no 82902. He had also served as Private, Army no 38674 with The York and Lancaster Regiment. He died from his wounds on Saturday 1 December 1917 in a nearby Casualty Clearing Station. He was 31. He was the son of Grace and Joseph Renton, Hetton. He is buried in Rocquigny-Equancourt Road British Cemetery, Manancourt and his headstone is inscribed Nearer My God to Thee. SPENCE, Rhodes Private, 1st/6th Battalion, The Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment), 147 Brigade, 49th Division. Army no 3702. He died from his wounds on Saturday 17 July 1915. He was 20. He was the son of Robert B and Annie Spence, Silsden. He is buried in Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. SWALES, James Thomas Ordinary Seaman, HMS Victory, Royal Navy. RN no SS/8309. He died of natural causes whilst on military service on Wednesday 3 July 1918. He was 18. He was the son of Fred and Eleanor R Swales, Cracoe. He is buried in the churchyard of St Peter’s Church, Rylstone and his headstone is inscribed Thy Will be Done. SWALES, Tom Private, 9th (Service) Battalion, The Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment), 52 Brigade, 17th Division. Army no 13653. He was killed in action on Friday 22 March 1918 at the Battle of St Quentin. He was 21. He was the son of Thomas and Grace Swales, Rylstone. He is remembered on The Arras Memorial. WHITFIELD, John William Private, 10th (Service) Battalion, The Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding Regiment), 69 Brigade, 23rd Division. Army no 15182. He was killed in action on Tuesday 9 October 1917 near Ypres. He was 25. He was the son of Thomas and Sara A Whitfield, Rock Cottage, Linton. He is remembered on The Tyne Cot Memorial. Those who Fell in WW2 DAGGETT, Sydney Pilot Officer, 10 Squadron, Royal Air Force. RAFVR no 169391. He died on active service on Saturday 29 January 1944. He was 29. He was the son of Aaron and Maud Daggett and the husband of Doris Dagget, Cracoe. He is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial. Additional information Halifax II JP133 ZA-D took off at 23.45 hours on an operation to Berlin. It was shot down by a night-fighter 23 kms from the centre of Berlin. 5 of the crew were captured and the other 2 died when the plane crashed. PROCTER, Richard Martin Lance Bombardier, 409 Battery, 53 (5th Battalion, The Royal Northumberland Fusiliers) Searchlight Regiment, Royal Artillery. Army no 1452162. He died on active service on Tuesday 7 October 1941. He was 26. He was the son of Robert G and Violet Proctor, Cracoe. He is buried in the churchyard of St Peter’s Church, Rylstone. Additional information He attended Uppingham and Trinity College Cambridge WALKER, Curtis Driver, Royal Army Service Corps, attached to HQ, 50th (Northumbrian) Division. Army no. T/113820. He died on active service on Saturday 14 November 1942, this was the day after the Eighth Army captured Tobruk. He was 24. He is remembered on the Alamein Memorial. He was the son of Curtis and Anne Walker, Hetton and the husband of Florence M Walker. Those who fell in WW2 who are not mentioned on the War Memorial FIELDEN, Stanley Earl Spensley Aircraftman 2nd Class, Royal Air Force. RAFVR no 1624171 He died on Monday 8 March 1943. He was 18. Son of Earl B and Sabina J Fielden, Bentham, Lancashire. He is buried in the churchyard of St Peter’s Church, Rylstone. Additional information He was posted to Devon and fell down a cliff at Goodrington whilst out walking with friends and died in Hospital the following day. His death was registered in Newton Abbott. – reported in Western Morning News on 10 March 1943. His Father was a famous pilot who had flown in WW1, then between wars he had worked in a flying circus and returned to the RAF in WW2 and rose to Group Captain. |
