​War Memorial in Ainderby Steeple
 
 
In the Churchyard of the Church of St Helen, Ainderby Steeple is a Memorial Cross which has
a circular base inscribed:
 
TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF
HARRY WOOD, BERTY FORTH, J GEORGE ROWELL, PERCY CLARK, R WILLIAM HODGSON
CYRIL W HORNER GEORGE FORTH, ERNEST H FISBURN, J JAMES SMITH
THE MEN OF THE PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR
 
 
In addition, there is an Illuminated Scroll which is inscribed:

Those who Fell in WW1
 
CLARK, Percy
Lance Corporal, C Company, 18th (Service) Battalion (1st County), The Durham Light Infantry, 93 Brigade, 31st Division.  Army no 18/473.
He was killed in action on Sunday 1 October 1916. He was 28.
He was the son of George and Alice Clark, Morton-on-Swale, Ainderby Steeple.
He is buried in Gorre British And Indian Cemetery near Bethune.
 
FISHBURN, Ernest Hutchinson
Private, 12th (Service) Battalion (Bermondsey), The East Surrey Regiment, 122 Brigade, 41st Division.  Army no 276329. He had also served as Private, Army no 27008, with The Army Service Corps.
He was killed in action on Wednesday 4 September 1918 during the Advance in Flanders. He was 26.
He was the son of Eliza Annie Fishburn, Ainderby Steeple.
He is remembered on The Tyne Cot Memorial.
 
FORTH, Bertie
Private, 4th Battalion TF, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 150 Brigade, 50th Division.  Army no 3893.
He was killed in action on Tuesday 14 March 1916 near Ypres. He was 18.
He was the son of George and Mary E Forth, Ainderby Steeple.
He is buried in Railway Dugouts Burial Ground (Transport Farm) and his headstone is inscribed Sadly Missed at Home.
 
 
FORTH, George
Bombardier, C Battery, 92nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Army no 18895.
He died from his wounds on Sunday 16 September 1917. He was 23.
He was the son of George and Mary E Forth, Ainderby Steeple.
He is buried in Bard Cottage Cemetery, Boezinge near Ypres.
 
HODGSON, Robert William
Private, 7th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 50 Brigade, 17th Division.  Army no 3/7771.
He was killed in action on Sunday 22 April 1917 during the Battles of Arras. He was 19.
He was the son of Fredrick William Hodgson, Low Cottages, Ainderby Steeple.
He is remembered on The Arras Memorial.
 
HORNER, Cyril Wilfred
Private, 10th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 62 Brigade, 21st Division.  Army no 26641.
He died from his wounds on Sunday 5 August 1917 near Arras. He was 30.
He was the nephew of Edith Spence.
He is buried in Cojeul British Cemetery, St Martin sur Cojeul.
 
LANGTON, Benjamin
Lance Corporal, 2nd Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 21 Brigade, 7th Division.  Army no 8173.
He died on Friday 10 December 1915 probably in Hospital in Amiens. He was 29.
He was the son of Fred and Christina Langton, Northallerton and the husband of Hannah Langton, Fir Vale House, Fir Vale, Sheffield.
He is buried in St. Pierre Cemetery, Amiens.
 
ROWELL, John George known as George
Lance Corporal, 8th (Service) Battalion, The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders), 26 Brigade, 9th Division.  Army no S/10457.  He had also served as Private, Army no 55270, with The Royal Garrison Artillery.
He was killed in action on Saturday 1 April 1916. He was 23.
He was the son of Harry and Elizabeth Rowell, Morton-on-Swale.
He is buried in Rifle House Cemetery which is in a wood at Ploegsteert.
 
SMITH, John James known as James
Private, 8th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 69 Brigade, 23rd Division.  Army no 26760.
He was killed in action on Sunday 8 October 1916 in the Battle of the Transloy Ridges.
He is remembered on The Thiepval Memorial.
 
WOOD, Harry
Private, 20th (Service) Battalion (3rd Public Schools), The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), 19 Brigade, 33rd Division.  Army no G/69061. He had also served as Private, Army no 4904 with 4th Battalion, The Buffs, (East Kent Regiment).
He died on Friday 30 November 1917 probably in a Casualty Clearing Station in the village. He was 32.
He was the son of Thomas and Mary E Wood, Northallerton and the husband of Elizabeth Wood, 129 Aldermans Green, Foleshill, Coventry.
He is buried in Nine Elms British Cemetery in Belgium.

ALLEN, Joseph
Private, 7th (Service) Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 50 Brigade, 17th Division.  Army no 28316.
He was killed in action on Thursday 8 February 1917 on the battlefields of the Somme. He was 32.
He was the son of Thomas and Amelia Allen and the husband of Jane A Allen, East Witton.
He is remembered on The Thiepval Memorial.
 
HALL, Robert
Sapper, 225th Field Company, Royal Engineers.  Army no 101283.
He was killed in action on Saturday 30 March 1918 on the Somme.
He is remembered on The Pozieres Memorial.
 
PEACOCK, John William
Private, 2nd Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales’s Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 21 Brigade, 30th Division.  Army no 36095.
He was killed in action on Wednesday 18 October 1916 at the battle of the Transloy Ridges. He was 26.
He was the son of John and Mary Jane Peacock.
He is remembered on The Thiepval Memorial.

HODGSON, Ronald
Sergeant, 153 Squadron, Royal Air Force. RAFVR no 1310359.
He died on military service on Tuesday 10 February 1942. He was 25.
He was the son of John and Laura Hodgson, Norton, Malton and the husband of Kathleen M Hodgson, Ainderby Steeple.
He is buried in Norton Cemetery near Malton.
 
SIMPSON, Christopher
Private, 17th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.  Army no 4466877.
He died on military service in the UK on Tuesday 28 August 1942.
He was the son of Charles and Margaret A Simpson and the husband of Clara Simpson, Thrintoft.
He is buried in the churchyard of St Helen’s Church, Ainderby Steeple and his headstone is inscribed RIP.
 
WOODBURN, Arthur
Private, 6th Battalion, The Lincolnshire Regiment. Army no 14587430.
He died in the fighting on the German defensive position known as the Gothic Line on Sunday 10 September 1944. He was 19.
He was the son of George A and Mary Woodburn, Ainderby Steeple.
He is buried in Montecchio War Cemetery and his headstone is inscribed Assured That Thou Shalt Show Thyself Beyond the Grave My Everlasting Friend.
